The AAC Evaluation Genie App: How to Get the Most Out of This Commonly Used Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Assessment Tool
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) assessments require clinicians to investigate areas beyond a student's current speech and language skills, such as their ability to access touchscreen devices and utilize word prediction. While there is not a standardized battery of diagnostic tools to determine what features a student needs in an AAC system, there are tools that can guide us in the right direction. One of these tools is the AAC Evaluation Genie app, which is administered on an iPad and has subtests covering things like vision and access, receptive vocabulary, symbol knowledge, and word recognition skills. The AAC Evaluation Genie is a commonly used informal diagnostic tool, yet there is minimal guidance in how to set it up and interpret the results. This training will review the components of the AAC Evaluation Genie and how to effectively administer the subtests based on your assessment questions.
Intended Audience
Speech-Language Pathologists with and without experience using the AAC Evaluation Genie app, especially those who have done or may conduct AAC assessments
Participants Will
- Learn about the AAC Evaluation Genie app and its history, subtests, and settings
- Review each of the AAC Evaluation Genie subtests and how they can be used as part of an AAC assessment
- Learn about how to use the app creatively to get more data than just the subtest results
- See video examples and screenshots showing how the AAC Evaluation Genie can be administered
